Helpless To Prevent Cancer

Cancer… odds are you know someone that this disease has affected (or it’s affected you). It is one of the main reasons that people cite when they’re in the process of quitting smoking or chewing tobacco. Many times people feel that they are helpless when it comes to preventing the disease, but a new study suggest that there may be things that you CAN control.

A study published in Nature suggests there is quite a bit we can do to affect our chances of getting cancer. “Many studies have shown that environmental risk factors and exposures contribute greatly to many cancers. Diet is related to colorectal cancer. Alcohol and tobacco are related to esophageal cancer. HPV is related to cervical cancer, and hepatitis C is related to liver cancer.”

The study goes on to suggest that, “About 25 percent of cancer in women and 33 percent in men was potentially preventable. Close to half of all cancer deaths might be prevented as well.”
